Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? In order to attract good students, a university should spend a lot of money funding social activities.
"Human beings", as Aristotle puts are "social animals". We tend to interact with our colleagues, fellow classmates, friends and family member on various aspects of our lives on a regular basis. College students are no exception. Exchanging ideas and socializing with their peer contribute a large part of their campus life, and they tend to respond positively to social activities. To attract good students, funding social activities by the university should be applauded.
Universities should fund social activities, like organizing multi-cultural events to involve international students and to facilitate understanding between local and international students. Other activities should include: holding talent shows to motivate students' creativity and arranging intramural sports competitions to cultivate students' competitiveness. A university that is very inclusive to all students by holding social events, despite their color, gender, race, and ethnicity, will undoubtedly attract the most open-minded and brilliant students, and in turn, these social activities of various forms can surely draw prospective students.

By saying the university should spare no effort to fund these kinds of activities, I am by no means arguing that we should do this without proper procedure; quite on the contrary, I would say university committee should prudently solicit students' votes on what kind of activity is most popular and wanted by students, arbitrarily spend tax payer's money on meaningless and unpopular events can be disastrous, and only after democratic decision-making process, can the university fund specific activities.
Admittedly, we cannot dispute that a university can also attract the brightest students by investing in recruiting world-renowned professors, facility renovation, and academic research. Unfortunately, these above-mentioned projects are not as effective as spending money to fund social activities, because students cannot be benefited directly from these projects, however, they can be directly benefited by attending social activities and develop their social skills, organizations skills and leadership through passionately participating these activities, and these soft skills are cherished by their future potential employers. Plus, students are more likely to be attracted by various interesting social activities than by prestigious but boring professors.

With the above analysis, college students are no exception of the category of "social animals" and they will respond actively to university funded social activities, and by careful choosing meaningful events and prudently funding interesting activities, universities are definitely able to attract the best of the brightest.
