On Courage
Hemingway often thought of courage as a person＇s ability to be calm and controlled in the face of death. His theme is presented in his novel "For Whom the Bell Tolls?" the story "The Old Man and the Sea" and in our textbook "A Day＇s Wait". By misunderstanding a different thermometer the boy thought he was running a high fever and would soon die. But he took his death bravely and waited quietly for it. The boy showed us he had courage.
I think such a definition of courage is far from enough. Courage should not be limited and related only to death. In ordinary life there are common things that also show a person＇s courage. For example, on a bus trip, a thief was trying to steal a girl＇s purse. Some people saw it, but kept quiet. They were afraid to be revenged by the thief. The brave stood out and stopped the thief.
Courage means truth and justice to me. The person in a high position often hear songs in praise of him. Some people are sincere. Some are only flattering the superior in their own favor. The leader also needs courage to welcome criticism as well as those who have the courage to criticize him. Such courage may come from mutual understanding. I think a man of courage will value truth and justice, and not hesitate in his actions to do what he thinks is right, There is no such word as fear in his dictionary.

海明威總是以為勇氣就是面對(duì)死亡沉著鎮(zhèn)靜，他的這一主題思想體現(xiàn)在他的小說《喪鐘為誰而鳴?》、《老人與海》以及課本里《一天的等待》中。孩子由于對(duì)溫度計(jì)的誤解，以為自己已輕發(fā)高燒并即將死去，而勇敢、鎮(zhèn)靜地等待死亡的來臨。此時(shí)，這孩子表現(xiàn)出勇氣。
我認(rèn)為給勇氣下這樣的定義遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)不夠。勇氣并不僅限于死亡或有關(guān)死亡的事。在日常生活中，從一些凡人小事中也可看出一個(gè)人的勇氣。比如，在公共汽車上，當(dāng)小偷在偷一個(gè)女孩子的錢包時(shí)，有的人看了一聲不吭，怕賊報(bào)復(fù)，而勇敢者卻挺身而出，抓住小偷。
在我看來，勇氣就是豎持真理和正義。一個(gè)地位高的人聽到的往往是贊歌，有些人是出于真誠，而有些人卻是為己之私而迎合上司的。正如批評(píng)別人的人需要勇氣一樣，領(lǐng)導(dǎo)者也要有勇氣接受人家的批評(píng)。這種勇氣來自相互理解。我想，一個(gè)有勇氣的人將維系真理與正義，他會(huì)毫猶豫地去做自己認(rèn)為正確的事，在勇取者的字典中，沒有害怕這個(gè)字?
